ಬೋಳಾರ ಬಾಬು ರಾವ್ -ವಾಗ್ದೇವಿ - ಮುನ್ನುಡಿ
Bolara Babu Rao[ 1848-1919] - one of the beginners in kannada novel. His bold and beautiful novel 'VAGDEVI' was published in 1905.Immoral life inside the Hindu religious institutions of 19th century is the theme of this novel.'SHIVALEELAMRATA' [1909] and BHAKTIMAHIME [1910] are his other published works.He was a tahshildar in south canara district.He was interested in social reforms.
Bolar Vittala rao, son of Bolar Babu Rao was a pioneer in the field of transport[ c. p. c], insurance[ popular insurance] and printing press [ saraswati mudranalaya- 1918].He started publishing two famous kannada magazines-'SUVASINI' and KANTEERAVA. from Mangalore.
It is interesting to note that Bolar Babu Rao's forward to his kannada novel is in english. He wrote this forward in 30th june, 1905. Full text of his forward is here-
